<p>Happy three year anniversary to Ember Music Hall! They celebrated by bringing The Glitch Mob back through for a DJ set alongside Bunshiin (The Netherlands), with an extended opening tag set from Joanna O. and DC&#8217;s DJ Slant to kick it off. They got the floor warmed up most proper and set up for the next two dj&#8217;s. Bunshiin played a mix of many genres featuring dnb, hard dance, 140 bpm, it was fun and wild. The Glitch Mob brought those organic funk and west coast breaks sounds we love! The crew is hoping to make this a yearly meetup with the Mob. It&#8217;s always a goodtime when they are in the RVA. Thanks to the dancefloor crews and dnb headz who came early and stayed late. #VIBES. </p>

Ember 3 Year Anniversary: Glitch Mob


<p>The tenth anniversary celebrating the Smooth n Groove record label was a good time! There was so much good music coming thru the speakers that I didn&#8217;t get many snaps. I guess you could say that the the dancefloor was calling. Exceptional sets from the Soul Deep and Smooth n Groove crews. It was super nice to host the UK guys I&#8217;ve been listening to for decades &#8211; Madcap, Soul Structure, and Aon. It was extra special to hear Los Angeles&#8217;s Scott Allen play live down the street from where I used to sling his vinyl Soul Deep records (Turnstyle). <p>Founded in 2016 by Clen &amp; Christal, the driving force behind Smooth N Groove Records. The label was born from their shared passion for the underground sounds of the d&amp;b scene. <p>It is ALWAYS a good time everytime Ben Soundscape and Collette Warren are performing! It was extra amazing to get to host them down the street from my house too. Loso is the perfect spot for our style of rolling bassline drum and bass. Big ups to the mid atlantic DNB crews that came through to dance with us. It was another one for the books and we can&#8217;t wait to do it again. Stellar sets from Ben and Collette. Special thanks to our guest DJ from Charlotte NC &#8211; Dub Science! Joanna O. held it down for two plus hours on the warm up spot. Even with the random FAA shutdown and a plane diversion with the headliners .. it went off in that special RVA way. New lights and the DJ booth additions since our last event were fantastic adds to an already sweet venue. Loso is a solid spot for good drum and bass. </p>



<p>Shouts to the Frequency radio crew who held it down proper with some breaks and house sounds on the patio &#8211; Blair Johnson &amp; Jesse Split had the area rocking out. Pretty sure I even saw some security guys smiling and getting down to the beats. That&#8217;s a win. Shouts to all the dance floor crew! </p>


Electric Jungle Review: Ben Soundscape & Collette Warren


<p>The last Cadence party held over the weekend at Berhta&#8217;s Bette stage was nothing short of AMAZING!! The Cadence crew ALWAYS comes correct with the stellar lineups and the sweet vibes. Big ups to all those involved in making that happen and all those dancefloor memories. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Big up all crew</h2>



<p>Special shouts to all those who traveled in by planes and trains to come vibe out in a huge way. The Uncommon Being crew bought it proper with their merch pop up shop. It was cool to be able to grab some of their shirts and gear at the party. The quality is superb. Big love to the Cali fam &#8211; Whys and Atmo for bringing it thru. And we have to discuss the music being heard all night long. It was dance floor action from start to finish. Baltimore&#8217;s Gingersnap got the floor super warmed up with sweet liquid selections. What a great set!! Richmond&#8217;s Joanna O. threw down a set both before and after LTJ Bukem. Extended vibey times on the floor! And of course LTJ Bukem is consistently bringing the vibes in the genre that he is most well known for. He plays tracks you haven&#8217;t heard yet , and classics you cannot wait to hear each time. He is a master and very skilled DJ. It&#8217;s never a bad time when you see his name on the lineup. This was one of his only three stops on this trip over from the UK. It may be awhile before we see him over in the USA for some time. Glad we could vibe out once more. What a legend!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">About the night</h2>



<p>The night was so astounding in the Bette room with the drum and bass family, that there is not much to report here about the other room. Trusted musical friends reported that Sven Vath was crushing it on vinyl though. And local DC fave Jus Nowhere had a great set too. The sound stacks in both rooms are phenomenal and the lighting is state of the art. It&#8217;s intense in a good way.  In between the two rooms was an incredible amount of interactive art. Huge lighting displays that you could get in. The fluffy cloud hanging from the massive ceiling was a display straight from a camp at Burning Man. There was even a hearse you could do a selfie in with the Berhta logo. So fun and very ravey. This multi acre venue complex (Berhta, Bette, and outdoor Bananas) is tucked away in DC and even has parking. That&#8217;s crazy in DC! It is such a great place to rave out in.  </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How long have you been involved in the underground scene, and how and when did you get started?</h2>



<p>I went to my first underground show in 2015 at Paradox in Baltimore. I had been apprehensive about going to raves, but my friends convinced me to come along. I ended up falling in love and from that night on I was hooked.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How long have you been DJ’ing, and who are a few of your current favorite artists and labels?</h2>



<p> I have been DJing for seven years and playing live shows for five years. My favorite artists at the moment include Need for Mirrors, Particle, Enei, Monrroe, Visages, and Monty. I love any releases from 1985, Critical Music, or V Recordings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tell me about your best gig ever.</h2>



<p>I’d have to say Moonrise 2023. That was the largest crowd I have ever played for, the energy was immaculate. I’ll never forget that day. I received so much love. I’m very grateful to have had such a massive opportunity to play the local stage at the last Moonrise Festival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can you give a tip or word of advice for younger DJ’s coming up in the scene?</h2>



<p>Look out for yourself. Don’t let anyone make your decisions for you. <br>Learn as much as you can. And stay humble.</p>

<p>Blair Johnson is a co-host on Turnstyle’s long-running USA Frequency radio show on WRIR 97.3 FM. He has been a reliable and steady source of house and techno beats on the radio in RVA. You can catch him monthly on Saturday nights in that 3rd week rotation. He also features local and regional guest sets too. He has decades of experience and really techy house beats that we LOVE.&nbsp; We are super stoked to get a rare IRL set from him in March. <strong>We asked him to answer a few questions ahead of his set at the next Electric Jungle. This special event is on Friday, March 13th at Loso (Broad Street, Richmond VA). <p><strong>What does the Richmond scene mean to you personally?</strong></p>



<p><strong>I think creativity as an outlet is important to everyone. When you build a community around your creativity, you find more people like you.</strong> It’s that connection that makes all your work worthwhile. It can be promoting, djing, producing, dancing, fashion, the list goes on. Richmond has a lot of that, with everyone contributing on all levels to foster music and nightlife.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>How long have you been dj’ing / producing? What are a few of your favorite current producers and record labels?</strong></p>



<p>My interests began in the early 2000s. I was a hip hop dj at school, who then got into parties and clubs shortly thereafter. Production started back in 2019, when COVID hit. Some of my influences are artists like Delano Smith, Jay Tripwire, Frank Roger, Satoshi Tomiie, Chez Damier, Nick Holder, Miguel Migs, and Felipe Gordon. Labels are Seasons, Deeper Shades of House, Real Tone, Compost, and Nordic Trax.</p>



<p><strong>What keeps you invested in underground nights like Electric Jungle? What can people expect to hear from you at the event?</strong></p>



<p><br>My roots are in the DnB nightlife. <strong>I’m a house dj/producer that gravitates towards the DnB scene</strong>. Diversity is key and so is balance. Having a solid blend of drum n bass with house and broken beats are always the way to go.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How long have you been involved in the underground scene, and how and when did you get started?</h2>



<p>I’ve been involved since I want to say around 2001.&nbsp; I lived in Northern Virginia and was going to any all age events I could at the time.&nbsp; The big one I remember that I still consider my first “rave” was Radiate @ DC Armory.&nbsp; I was heavily influenced by Buzz and Scott Henry, he was a major influence on me wanting to DJ and get involved in the underground scene.&nbsp; Around 2005, I was DJing on vinyl and played events across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How long have you been DJ’ing, and who are a few of your current favorite artists and labels?</h2>



<p>I’ve been on / off with DJing over the years.  I’d say a grand total of seriously DJing around 6 years.  I had a lot of time off when I had young kids, and couldn’t keep up with the pricey equipment, etc.  Probably half of that was spent DJing on  vinyl and the other half all digital.  Some of my favorite labels are Sofa Sound, Critical Music, Trust Audio, Transparent Audio, V Recordings, Rolled Up Records, and Shogun Audio.  Some of my favorite artists are Crystal Clear, Minor Forms, Kublai, Ed:it, Dub Head, Business as Usual, Genic, and Molecular.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tell me about your best gig ever.  </h2>



<p>So, my favorite gig ever was playing vinyl at ALIAS @ Nation night club (RIP).&nbsp; It was the only time I got to play at the infamous Nation but I’m grateful I was able to, even if it wasn’t at Buzz/Cubik.&nbsp; I grew up with that venue, I was a regular there, and eventually I was a promoter for Cubik.&nbsp; So, it brings a lot of memories and I was honored to be able to play there in any capacity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Have you played in RVA before? What can people expect to hear from you at the next Electric Jungle? </h2>



<p>I have never had the pleasure of playing in Richmond, VA before but I’m very much looking forward to playing a show there.&nbsp; You can expect heavy rollers, tech step, and maybe some jungle.&nbsp; I’d say prepare for the unexpected, I try to improvise as much as possible to keep things fresh and interesting for the crowd.</p>

<p>After two decades on Broad Street, WRIR 97.3 FM is moving to a new location in the Shockoe Bottom area of Richmond. Never fear, Saturday nights will still be here for you radio crew. Frequency will still be airing fresh music on Saturdays at 9 pm ET and you can hit the archives after.  We will just not be on Broad Street broadcasting. It&#8217;s the bittersweet end of one chapter and the beginning of an exciting new one. </p>



<p>For twenty years we have called 1621 West Broad Street home to our music on Saturday nights. I basically grew up as a person and DJ within those walls.  I became an expert at the craft by showing up every single week. Many years lugging a backpack full of my latest 12” Vinyl favorites and often arriving on foot or by bus. Running up the stairs to spend four hours every Saturday night playing beats AND hosting DJ’s? Sounded like a win to me. Frequency took place in the first two hours of the four hour music block in the evening. It was followed by the Guest DJ Spotlight after that took us into late night.  Dance music in the early 2000’s finally had a place on the radio dial in Richmond. We were thrilled to be a part of this low power FM movement. In the early years, we represented the station to the actual FCC in DC.  That was when Clear Channel was trying to mute local voices on the dial throughout the USA.&nbsp;(But that&#8217;s a story for another time..) There was no one to tell us what to play, or when to play it. The only thing we really needed was to stay within the rules set by the FCC. Which basically means no obscene language. That became more difficult for me as the breaks vinyl I played was full of language not FCC appropriate. So, I started playing drum and bass on the radio instead and never looked back.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The current radio station is nestled above the Camel Restaurant. In the beginning it was WILD! A legit squatter was living in one of the rooms that had not yet been converted to a radio space. He asked us to turn down the music that first night as he was trying to sleep. What?!. No way. We didn&#8217;t turn it down. The squatter moved out.  And we continued to bang it out loudly for another one thousand and ninety two more Saturday nights after that. The first show on January 1, 2005 feels like yesterday. I  remember wearing a 555 Soul top that I wish I still owned. And fresh with a bag of recent nu skool breaks records from the Turnstyle store. We hosted a few locals that first night and played records til we didn’t feel like it anymore. Hours went by when we turned off the transmitter to go home for the night / morning.&nbsp; My apologies go out to those early listeners. Shutting off the transmitter meant the country music station (located ninety miles to the south),  prevailed on our frequency. What a bummer to go from breaks and techno to all out country music. No offense to country music. &nbsp;</p>



<p>A very select few core memories are persistent. They make me grateful for the community the radio has provided me for so many years. It is and was always a true community space. The fund drives twice yearly so lively and random. I remember running into members of GWAR and Lamb of God hanging out casually in the kitchen.&nbsp; And a fun and wild night dancing in the new studio with DC&#8217;s beloved <a href="https://turnstyleonline.com/shows/scott-henry-terry-mullan-rewind-mix"><strong>Scott Henry.</strong></a> I loved watching <a href="https://turnstyleonline.com/shows/scott-henry-terry-mullan-rewind-mix"><strong>Terry Mullan </strong></a>spin a two hour acid house set on a card table. The early model CDJ’s we had borrowed swayed back and forth. He lit them up like he was mixing records. Frankie Bones stopped through for an interview on the origins of P.L.U.R. and the early love parade he was a part of.  Drum and bass legends like Odi, Danny the Wildchild, and Reid Speed, played.  Along with hundreds of local, regional, national and international DJ&#8217;s throughout all the electronic genres. I also feel the need to give a shout to the very first early on air live caller.  There’s nothing quite like hearing the sounds of someone hitting a bong on air. Pretty funny RVA! And to the weekend jail warriors that would call in with their collect calls we couldn&#8217;t accept. We know you were listening! It was all so inspiring. </p>

Last Frequency on Broad Street


<p>It’s easy to have fun in Baltimore. It’s hands down one of my favorite cities on the East Coast for raving it up. Drum and Bass or house..doesn’t matter. This city has so much rich history for amazing musical talent. </p>



<p>The Junglist Bassprint party was not only Resident Advisors event pick for things to do, but mine as well!  Clothing creation and drum &amp; bass in the same spot. Yes please! So much fun was had at the pop up warehouse party on Saturday. Big love to Navid at Syndicate Screenprint and Billy aka DJ Nerva for making this party happen. Sending big thanks to the sound &amp; light crew. Huge shouts to all the people that brought their fun energy to the warehouse. The vibes and music were on point throughout.  Getting to play a ninety minute set was a proper good time too. Shouts to the DJ’s that crushed it &#8211; DJ Nerva, Slee-p, and Dee Clark (with that vinyl set! YO!). Seeing people spinning vinyl felt like a warm hug.</p>



<p>After the warehouse party was quick stop by Ultra Nate’s famous Deep Sugar party at 1722. This is the first time in attendance and the queen herself was in the building spinning. I LOVE ULTRA NATE! She’s super inspiring and has been positively paving the way for ladies my whole rave life. House music’s finest in the building! So glad to have gotten a chance to be there. Big love to those I ran into on the dance floor too. </p>



<p>I’ve been coming to Baltimore for many years to hear music, hit the dance floor, and DJ too. Some of my favorite memories come from times spent with good people in this gritty city. I’m happy to add this weekend’s events to those great memories too. Big ups to all my old school friends and the new ones made too. You know who you are. <p>Big ups all crew on that stellar night of drum and bass family times in Richmond! The #RVA was innit for the Electric Jungle night at Loso. The Danley system hummed throughout the dark AF back room that was illuminated with minimal lighting and a touch of fog. It was VIBES in the building from start to finish as the DMV&#8217;s DNB OG&#8217;s hit the decks all night. From the time the doors opened til after the last track dropped  (That new Golden Girl remix!! )- people were Here for it! It was a great way to wrap up October in the 804 and we look forward to more Electric Jungle times next year. #BOH to the RVA / DC massive! Thanks much to the party people who came near and far to throw down with us. Family vibes all night inside the ride.  THANKS SO MUCH! </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Rise of Drum &amp; Bass</strong></h3>



<p>Drum &amp; bass has come a long way in the last few years. It’s been amazing to see the sound move from underground rooms to global stages. The producer/DJ duo <strong>Chase &amp; Status</strong> have been part of that rise since the start.</p>



<p>I first saw them in 2011 on their <em>No More Idols</em> Tour in Washington, DC — a packed club with a few hundred ravers. Fourteen years later, it’s apparent that both Chase &amp; Status and drum &amp; bass have reached new heights.</p>



<p>Brooklyn was rumbling last weekend — not from trains, but from bass rolling beneath the K-Bridge. You could feel it before you saw the crowd. Thousands came from across the East Coast for drum &amp; bass. Under the skyline, the mix of old-school heads, new fans, UK transplants, and NYC locals. Concrete pillars, flashing lasers, and echoing bass made the night come alive.</p>



<p>Chase &amp; Status came in heavy from the start. Their set played like a timeline of the sound — from jungle breaks to high-energy DNB. Every transition was tight, every drop on point. They shouted out the OG junglists holding it down. Tracks like <strong>“Baddadan”</strong> and <strong>“Selecta”</strong> got huge reactions, while deeper cuts reminded the old school raver why they’re still on top. The visuals matched the sound — strobes, lasers, and projections lighting the space. You could close your eyes and picture an East London warehouse in the late ’90s — except this was Brooklyn, 2025, under a bridge. It’s been a long road for drum &amp; bass in America, but this night showed how far it’s come.</p>



<p>The people under that bridge came to dance — DC heads, Philly junglists, NYC OGs, and new ravers too. Every classic break or vocal drop got a cheer. When Shy FX played <strong>“Roll The Dice” (feat. Stamina MC &amp; Lily Allen)</strong>, the crowd went off. Big respect to <strong>The Bowery Presents</strong>, the staff, and the production crew. And props to <strong>Mary Droppinz, Shy FX, G Jones,</strong> and <strong>Taiki Nulight</strong> for crushing their sets too.</p>



<p>If the K-Bridge show was a statement, the <strong>Driven AM </strong>party was an OG celebration. Driven AM has supported the NYC DNB community for years, and <em>The Attic</em> was the perfect space — dark, close, and most importantly &#8211; full of bass! The <em>Stateside Series</em> doubled as the afterparty with <strong>Human, Render One, myself (Joanna O.)</strong>, and <strong>Agent 137. </strong>It wasn’t about names or hype,  just music and people. Old friends, new faces, and a shared love for the sound. </p>
